6 Day Umbwe Route

The Umbwe Route is considered the most challenging way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. This route offers steep climbs and stunning views, but also requires a high level of physical fitness and mountain climbing experience. It takes approximately six to seven days to complete the journey, with trekkers passing through rainforests, moorlands, and glaciers. Despite the challenges, many climbers choose the Umbwe Route for its stunning scenery and the sense of accomplishment that comes with conquering this iconic mountain.

Day by Day Itinerary

DAY 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

We will register at Umbwe Route Park Gate and follow a small, winding path that leads us through the Montane Forest and along the Umbwe river. This 11km journey takes about 6 hours to complete and ends at Umbwe Cave Camp, which is situated at an altitude of 2900m.

Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

A 6km trek from Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp, with an elevation gain from 2940m to 3970m. After leaving the camp, we will witness the Western Breach’s sheer wall, which appears and disappears with the afternoon mists rolling up the Great Barranco. We will stay at Barranco Camp for the night.

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

We will scramble to the top of the Great Barranco Wall, which is a short and fun climb. From there, we will traverse over scree to the Karanga Valley (3930m) beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. The Alpine Desert is the habitat of this 7km journey, and we will spend the night at Karanga campsite.

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

A 6km trek from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp, with an elevation gain from 3930m to 4600m. After leaving Karanga campsite, we will meet the junction that connects to the Mweka descent Trail and continue up to the Barafu Hut, completing the Southern Circuit that offers views of the summit from many different angles. We will rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day at camp, with the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo visible from this position.

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut

We’ll begin the summit trek at 23:30 after a quick energy boost. Ascending via Rebman and Ratzel glaciers, heavy scree, and Stella Point (5732m) for a short rest and sunrise viewing. After reaching Uhuru Peak (5895m), we’ll descend to Mweka Hut campsite via Barafu for lunch. Expect stone scree and ice-capped summit habitat, loose gravel needing trekking poles, and a satisfying dinner and rest.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Hotel

We will descend from our 6 Days Umbwe Route to the Mweka Park Gate after breakfast, which takes about 3-4 hours to cover a distance of 8km. We will receive our summit certificates at the gate and face wet and muddy lower elevations. Gaiters and trekking poles will be useful, and we can wear shorts and t-shirts while keeping rain gear and warmer clothing handy. The habitat of this trek is Montane Forest.
