Route Highlights:
Day 1: Machame Hut Camp
Day 2: Shira Plateau
Day 3: Barranco Camp
Day 4: Karanga Camp
Day 5: Barafu Camp
Day 6: Summit and Mweka Camp
The Machame route, also known as the “Whiskey” route, is a challenging yet rewarding trek up Kilimanjaro Mountain. While it is more expensive than the Marangu route, it is considered one of the best routes for acclimatization and cost. This route is better suited for experienced trekkers due to its difficulty. Although it is popular, the scenery is still beautiful and varied, including the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, the Great Barranco wall, and Kilimanjaro’s southern ice field. The Machame route is physically demanding, but provides plenty of opportunities for acclimatization. It is a great option for splitting the pre-summit day climb and leaving climbers rested before reaching the summit.
Day 1: Machame Hut Camp
We will start the day with a short drive to the Machame trailhead (~5,380’). After checking in with the park rangers, we will embark on a hike through the beautiful montane forests and mossy jungle, until we reach Machame Hut camp.
Duration of Hike: 5-7 hours
Altitude at Overnight Stay: ~9,350′
Day 2: Shira Plateau
After breakfast, we will continue our hike through the forest, taking our time to enjoy the stunning scenery of the moorlands. We will be treated to breathtaking views of Kibo peak.
Duration of Hike: 4-6 hours
Altitude at Overnight Stay: ~12,500′
Day 3: Barranco Camp
Today, we will focus on acclimatization by taking an acclimatization hike to Lava Tower (~15,190’) for lunch. For those who are feeling energetic, there’s the option to scramble up the Lava Tower itself. We will then descend to the Barranco valley, passing through different zones of the mountain, and spending the night at Barranco camp.
Duration of Hike: 6-8 hours
Altitude at Overnight Stay: ~13,044′
Day 4: Karanga Camp
We will continue our acclimatization journey today by climbing the steep Barranco Wall, before traversing several ridges and valleys to arrive at Karanga camp. There will be time for an acclimatization hike in the afternoon.
Duration of Hike: 4-5 hours
Altitude at Overnight Stay: ~13,106′
Day 5: Barafu Camp
We will continue our trek, with some ups and downs along ridges and valleys, until we reach Barafu camp – our final camp before the summit. We will have an early supper, sleep for a few hours, and wake up at around 11:00 PM to begin our summit ascent.
Duration of Hike: 3-4 hours
Altitude at Overnight Stay: ~15,331′
Day 6: Summit and Mweka Camp
We will start hiking at midnight, using our headlamps to light the way as we slowly make our way up to Stella Point and then the summit. Due to the high altitude, we will hike slowly and dress warmly for the cold. After celebrating with photos at the summit, we will descend to Mweka camp.
Duration of Hike: 6-7 hours to reach the summit, followed by 6-9 hours of descent
Summit Altitude: ~19,341′
Altitude at Overnight Stay: ~10,500′
Day 7: Mweka Park Gate (~5,000’) to Arusha
We will make the final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where we will have lunch and bid farewell to our mountain crew. We will then drive back to Arusha for a hot shower and a celebratory dinner.
Duration of Hike: 3-5 hours
