DAY TOUR to Materuni Waterfalls
Explore the charming Materuni village, nestled in the scenic foothills of Kilimanjaro, where you’ll discover the secrets of coffee and the refreshing Materuni Falls. Begin your adventure with a short drive from Moshi to Materuni, situated approximately 1,800 meters above sea level, boasting ideal conditions for growing top-quality coffee. Delve into the world of coffee farming with a visit to a local farm, where you’ll learn firsthand about cultivation, harvesting, and roasting methods according to Chagga tradition. Following a delightful coffee break, embark on a picturesque 45-minute hike through lush hills and valleys, passing through banana and coffee plantations, guided by local expertise on plant usage and Chagga culture.
At Materuni Falls, experience the thundering waters and perhaps catch a glimpse of a rainbow as the sunlight dances upon the cascading streams. Tucked away in a pristine valley, the falls plunge dramatically into a serene pool, inviting you to relax and rejuvenate after your hike. Take a refreshing swim in the pure mountain waters, untouched by the sun’s heat. It’s not just an adventure; it’s an opportunity to connect with nature and gain insight into a unique way of life
DAY TRIP ITINERARY to Tarangire National Park
You’ll have two transport options from Moshi town to the village. For an authentic experience, hop on a dala dala, the local minibuses. If you prefer a quicker and more comfortable ride, choose a private car. Once you arrive in the village, your coffee tour will commence at a traditional Chagga “shamba” (farm).
Your guide will give you insights into Chagga homestead life, including other crops grown besides coffee. Witness the coffee-making process, from bean picking to roasting, and savor a delicious cup. After the tour, embark on a short hike (be sure to wear sports or mountain boots, as it can get muddy). You’ll pass through local villages to reach the waterfalls.
For lunch, you’ll either have a picnic box or enjoy a freshly cooked meal prepared by a local family. Following lunch, take a refreshing dip in the quite cold pools beneath the waterfalls.
